To 2015 and beyond: we’re shaping our future!
Monday, November 28, 2011
Community Care Council delegates at 2011 SEIU Local 1 Canada Convention identify our main areas of focus for the next four years.
In November, our SEIU members helped us have a dream that’s longer than a lifetime. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of our delegates, our 2011 SEIU Local 1 Canada Convention was a roaring success. Today, our sights are squarely set on success; together, we will achieve greatness.
Nestled in the gorgeous Muskoka woods, more than 350 delegates from our three sectors met at the Deerhurst Resort to identify main areas of focus for your SEIU over the next four years. We heard from many special guests, including SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry, MP Olivia Chow and MPP Jagmeet Singh – just to name a few. We discussed politics, elected Officers and Board members, and even had a talent show. It was a busy few days indeed, but much has been accomplished.
The Community Care Council met to discuss inter-council issues, and began laying the foundation of our work until 2015 and beyond. It was truly a collaborative effort, with input from our home care and community services members. After discussing sector challenges and possible solutions, the team came up with action statements for three areas of focus – political action, member engagement and community awareness and outreach. Over the next four years...
1. The Council will strive to achieve harmonization and equity for all Community Care Council members through political action.
2. The Council will strive to involve more members by committing to communication, education and empowerment to foster member engagement.
3. The Council will strive to achieve maximum public awareness through education, outreach and networking.
Equipped with our new mandate, your Community Care Council pledges to work with our members to ensure we not only meet our goals, but surpass them!
Many of you also responded to our call for new Community Services Committee members. The group, which is made up solely of Community Care Members, will continue to promote the unique issues faced by our Sisters and Brothers in the mental health sector.
SEIU Local 1 Canada, I want to sincerely thank all Community Care Council delegates who attended our Convention. Your spirit and enthusiasm was contagious – let’s keep the momentum going! This is the time to step up and bring the message of our Convention back to your colleagues; together, let’s have a dream that’s longer than a lifetime. We hope you are excited for what’s in store for our Council. To 2015 and beyond, we’re shaping our future!
