SEIU forms new unit on the West Coast

Wednesday, October 05, 2011

SEIU Local 1 Canada scored their very first recruitment victory in British Columbia. Employees at Family Services of Greater Vancouver (Youth Detox) voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada on September 1, 2011 by a whopping 92% margin. SEIU welcomes 42 members into the union.

“These 42 workers are SEIU Local 1 Canada’s first unit in British Columbia,” said Bill Hulme, Organizing Lead for the campaign. “Our union expects many other workers, especially in community and social services, to continue to join our innovative and growing union in 2011.”

SEIU’s new West Coast members work in the community and social services. They are social workers, addictions counsellors, and youth workers. Their main bargaining priorities are seniority issues, better scheduling, and improved wages and benefits.

SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 50,000 healthcare and community services workers in Ontario and British Columbia. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
