Purple power reigns again! Workers at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home and Cremation Centre voted on Wednesday May 25th to join SEIU Local 1 Canada, proving that the voices of workers truly are stronger together. This union certification victory at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home in the West Hill community in Scarborough, gives a voice to employees and makes sure certain standards are developed and maintained.
“As funeral service professionals work closely with the health care community it was important to both locations that their union be representative of these strong ties,” said John Klein SEIU’s lead organizer for the campaign. “SEIU’s impressive reputation of working with health care workers throughout the province made the decision an easy one particularly after watching their colleagues quickly secure a strong first collective agreement.”
The new SEIU members at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home include licensed Funeral Directors, Funeral Director Assistants, Administrators, Receptionists and Service Drivers.
“The employees hope that SEIU’s mission to improve the lives of working people and their families will translate into an improved work-life balance with their families so they are better able to serve the community.We’re going to do that for them,” adds Klein.
