Representing over 20,000 workers strong
Nearly half of SEIU Local 1 Canada’s members work in long-term homes. They are a diverse group of people that includes nurses, health care aides, personal support workers, dietary and housekeeping aides, and maintenance staff, to name only a few of their jobs.
SEIU Local 1 Canada has improved their working conditions by increasing their wages, improving their benefit plans and lobbying employers and the government to establish better safety standards to protect them from workplace violence.
SEIU Local 1 Canada also believes patients and residents in Ontario’s nursing homes should receive 3.5 hours of care every day. Currently, Ontario has the second-lowest rating for nursing home care standards in Canada.
Ontario should aim to be a leader in resident and patient care.
