Registered nurses at Fairview Nursing Home are now members of the fastest-growing union in Canada. They voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada at a certification vote on June 23, 2009.
“Fairview nurses felt their employer was not addressing important issues such as job security and benefits,” said Richelle Stewart, the lead organizer for the campaign. “SEIU has already has nearly 100 members at Fairview Nursing Home. These nurses wanted the same kind of representation their co-workers have with our union.”
SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 46,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
