Know Your Rights

It is your right to form a union in your workplace. Every province in Canada enforces and protects your right to form a union, and employers are not permitted to interfere. Joining a union is a democratic and civil right.

Employers are not allowed to stop workers from joining or organizing a union. If an employee has joined a union or is trying to organize a union, an employer cannot:

  • Cut their wages
  • Reduce their hours
  • Demote their position
  • Threaten their job
  • Reduce their job responsibilities
  • Ask employees if they have signed a union card
  • Stop employees from talk about a union

Employers have paid hefty fines for breaking these laws. Workers should not let their employer’s intimidate them. Workers must know their rights to protect themselves.
