Employees at Kingsway Arms Management at Applewood Manor, a retirement home in Peterborough, voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada on April 21, 2009.
"RPNs, personal support workers, housekeepers, dietary aides and kitchen staff have given themselves a voice in their workplace," said Tyler Downey, lead organizer for the organizing drive. "SEIU will help Applewood staff address important issues, such as seniority rights, with their employer."
SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 46,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
