Be Prepared on How Employers Will Respond
Workers shouldn’t be surprised if their employer tries to stop a union drive. Unions mean less power for management and a stronger voice for workers. Here are some methods managers often use to stop their employees from unionizing:
Promise to increase wages and benefits, but never following through
Meet employees one-on-one to pressure them to oppose a union, but without ever offering any concrete alternatives
Use favouritism to sway votes or divide workers
Recruit anti-union staff to campaign against pro-union workers
Threaten to cut wages, benefits, make lay-offs, etc.
Employees should remember they are not alone. SEIU Local 1 Canada has a team of organizers who understand Canada’s workplace laws and know how to help workers combat anti-union campaigns.
