Supermajority at nursing home votes for SEIU

Thursday, July 28, 2011

95% of the staff at Ivan Franko Home in Toronto voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada on July 22, 2011. The Local welcomes 80 new members into the SEIU family.

“These employees have no extended health benefits, pension program, a small number of vacation days and only two sick days,” said John Klein, the lead organizer for the campaign. “These workers approached SEIU and asked us to improve their working lives. SEIU will deliver on their promise.”

The three main bargaining goals for this new unit is:

1. Create an extended health benefit plan for employees
2. Draw up an acceptable grid for vacation entitlement
3. Establish a defined pension program to ensure a comfortable retirement

SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 50,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
