Collingwood Nursing Home RNs

On August 26, 2010 over 50 employees at Collingwood Nursing Home joined SEIU. The registered nurses (RN)s at the home saw with their own eyes how a real union like SEIU can improve the way people work. That’s why they voted 100 per cent in favour of joining SEIU Local 1 Canada at a certification vote held on May 4, 2011. SEIU welcomes 10 new members into the fastest growing union in Ontario.

“The RNs want SEIU to help them make some changes to their scheduling process, seniority rights and benefits plan,” said Bastian Williams, one of the lead organizers in the campaign.

The top issue Collingwood Nursing Home’s RNs want addressed is scheduling. Sometimes RNs at the home are expected to work 16-hour shifts. The RNs want to work regular day, evening and night shifts, as well as hire some additional RNs to improve resident care at the home.

SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 50,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
