Another Yee Hong nursing home joined SEIU after 85% of the employees at Yee Hong McNichol voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada on October 19, 2010. SEIU welcomes approximately 170 new members.
“It’s all about respect,” said Rabia Syed, lead organizer for the campaign. “Workers from this nursing home just want to be treated with dignity while they are on the job.”
The new members are a diverse group of RNs, RPNs, dietary aides, PSWs, activity aides, housekeeping, maintenance, social workers, facility aides and others. Nearly three attempts have been made to organize this home and they all failed. Until SEIU stepped into the picture.
SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 47,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
