The Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Mississauga voted 84 per cent in favour of joining SEIU Local 1 Canada at a certification vote on December 14, 2010. SEIU welcomes over 180 new members into the union. This is the third Yee Hong location to join SEIU since August.
“Yee Hong employees at Mississauga saw how their co-workers in Markham and Toronto empowered themselves by forming a union in their workplace,” said Rabia Syed, lead organizer for the campaign. “They want to have the same opportunity to improve their working conditions.”
Some of the issues to be addressed at the bargaining table are wages, benefits, scheduling and respect in the workplace.
SEIU Local 1 Canada is an organizing union that represents more than 50,000 health care and community service workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes, and community services.
