Employees won big in a union vote on August 1, 2008 when 29 out of 31 workers employed at Hawk Residential Care & Treatment Homes in Lindsay voted to join SEIU Local 1 Canada. In all, the Local welcomed a total of 42 new members working in three different locations into the SEIU family.

“At SEIU it’s our job to empower people,” said Matt Gailitis, Lead Organizer for the campaign. “Our union has a great reputation giving a voice to workers as well as improving standards of care in nursing and retirement homes.”

SEIU Local 1 Canada is an Organizing Union that represents more than 46,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. Its members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement homes and community services.
