Some examples of Hospital Staff Reductions

  • Humber River Regional Hospital - Toronto - $12 million deficit. It wants to save $1 million in dietary alone - if it can not achieve these savings, it wil lay off 80 FTE.
  • University Health Networks -Princess Margaret Hospital -Toronto - $5.4 million deficit. Layoff notices have been given to all Registered Practical Nurses and Patient Care Aides. RPNs 9 - FT, 1 - PT, 7-casuals. PCAs 8 - FT, 1 - PT, 5 - casuals. Process to be completed by end of February, through early retirements, buy out packages and bumping. The hospital says all departments still have to reduce by 10 per cent. This will be about 7 FTE positions for SEIU Local 1.on members.
  • Mount Sinai - Toronto. Has a defict, but union has been informed of 1 layoff so for.
  • Toronto East General. Two clerical positions are eliminated as well as two professionals.
  • University Health Networks - Toronto General Hospital Laid off 1 registered practical nurse.
  • William Osler - 3 hospitals have a $27 million deficit. Last July hospital said it would reduce 400 full-time equivalents. New private hopsital now being constructed in Brampton.
  • McCausland Hospital - Terrace Bay Invited ARAMARK - a private housekeeping and dietary provider to investigate potential savings amongst support services.
  • Hospital admits significant savings are not promising under ARAMARK since only one partial management position could be reduced.
  • Southlake Regional Hospital - Newmarket - $12 million in debt. Union avoided announced RPN lay offs in the middle of December. Ministry announcement now may mean cuts else where or RPN lay offs could be back on.
  • St. Michaels Hospital - Toronto. Hospital has met with hospital staff, but refuses to tell SEIU Local 1.on what it plans to do to other than it is undertaking transition planning and staff will be tranfered to a new company over the next three to five months (HBS).
  • Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - Deficit $ 9 million.
  • West Park - Toronto $2.3 million deficit There will be 24 fewer FTE. For SEIU Local 1.on this means : 5 FT secretaries, 1 FT funding support, 2 FT housekeeping, 1FT dietary aide, 2PT transport, 2 FT rehab assisstants, 1FT unit clerk, 1PT unit clerk.
  • Kirkland Lake Hospital - Kirdland Lake - $2 million deficit. Before $200 million transitional funding annoucement this maens the hospital would need to reduce 25 FTEs
  • Royal Victoria Hospital - Barrie - $3 million deficit.
