Let's make a Difference!
Comcare, a profitable home care company, has a staffing problem. Many of their home care workers are leaving the company, leaving the agency short staffed. That means the company doesn’t have the womanpower to take care of their clients. This situation has gotten so bad that other home care agencies have been called to service Comcare’s own clients.
Why are Comcare workers, especially in Sudbury and Thunder Bay, finding new work elsewhere? The big reason is their poor travel and mileage plan. Comcare workers in Sudbury only receive mileage money (20 cents per km) when they drive over 20 km from one client to another. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. What is the result? Comcare employees are forced them to pay for their own gas, insurance, and other car expenses out of their own pocket.
Some workers who are employed by other home care agencies receive 32 cents per km between clients. Shouldn’t Comcare workers be earning the same amount as other home care workers? We think so.
Comcare’s high turnover rates and client care issues could be easily resolved. All they need to do is step up to the bargaining table with SEIU Local 1 Canada and negotiate a collective agreement that improves their mileage plan, wages and benefits.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But Comcare thinks otherwise. They have dragged on negotiations for well over a year, leaving Comcare Sudbury workers without a contract. And the main victims are the company’s clients.
Send a message to Comcare! Come out and show your support for Comcare’s clients and employees to a rally on Monday, March 8, at 4:00 pm on the corner of Lasalle Blvd & Notre Dame Ave in Sudbury. Let Comcare know they need to start treating their clients and staff with the respect and dignity they deserve!
