TORONTO - Community Service Workers Join SEIU Local 1.on

Monday, May 15, 2006

In an Ontario Labour Relations Board supervised vote held on May 12th, employees of the Community Resource Connections of Toronto voted 34 to 6 in favour of SEIU Local 1.on as their voice on the job.

The 51 member bargaining unit perform jobs as community support workers, health promoters, case managers, outreach workers, and mental health housing and court support workers.

SEIU organizer Nathan Field says the main reasons these workers wanted a union is because they are worried about the effects the reorganization of health care, under the new Local Health Integration Networks, may have on their jobs. Many also have not had a wage increase for over ten years as a result of cut backs in social services budgets.
