On May 2, make your vote count. Vote for a healthy Canada.
Friday, April 29, 2011
On May 2, Canadians coast to coast will elect a new government. From education to healthcare, your vote will shape our Canada. Are you equipped with the right tools to make an informed decision?
SEIU Local 1 Canada takes the issue most important to Canadians – healthcare – to heart. As a healthcare provider or caregiver, you know firsthand that our current system has serious shortcomings. Our aging population will stress our healthcare system even further, putting it at risk.
We’re approaching a real crisis. The wrong leader could put the well-being of your clients, as well as your job, in jeopardy.
SEIU Local 1 Canada is in your corner. Your union is fighting for a sustainable healthcare system.
A snapshot of Canada’s healthcare system today
• 10,000 elderly and disabled Ontarians are currently on the home care waiting list
• Did you know that only a fraction of government funding for home care in Ontario actually gets to the workers providing the care? More than half of the funds are spent on bureaucracy and CEO salaries.
• 30,000 Ontarians are on the long-term care waiting list.
• Our population is aging. It is estimated that the senior population will increase by 24% in the next five years.
• Some politicians believe privatization of health services will control healthcare costs. Your jobs are at risk.
• 87% of Canadians support public healthcare – let’s fight for it!
• Healthcare spending and efficiency will have to rise to accommodate our aging population.
The numbers don’t add up – we need a solution.
SEIU’s answers
SEIU is working to change our healthcare system for the better. We believe in three key improvements to the system that would result in immediate health benefits for Canadians.
1. A stronger home care system to support our aging population
2. Client-centred healthcare policies that put quality care first and support family caregivers
3. Better use of allied health professionals and their specialized expertise
Our ultimate goal is a sustainable, public healthcare system that is accessible to all Canadians. We can get there with your support!
