Staff at Island View Retirement Suites voted overwhelmingly in favour of SEIU Local 1 Canada as their union at a certification vote on February 8, 2011.
Our 40 newest members - which include personal support workers (PSWs), registered practical nurses (RPNs), dietary aides, maintenance workers, activity aides and housekeeping staff - are looking forward to the benefits of SEIU.
“I support having the union because without one we have no one to fight for us,” said Esteban Rodriguez, a maintenance employee at Island View. “By voting yes, we will have a voice at Island View.”
The top issue Island View employees want addressed is job security. SEIU’s new members want to be protected from unjust terminations and address the company’s high employee turnover rate.
Island View Retirement Suites is located in Arnprior, a small community located one hour west of Ottawa.
