Community service workers share common vision at conference

Friday, March 18, 2011

What makes a good leader? What makes a great one? On March 10, 2011, community service workers from across the province attended a conference in Markham, Ontario to discuss just that.

“We’re all leaders,” said Estelle Penny, a personal support worker in Toronto. “It’s really good to meet like this and exchange ideas. We go back with new skills and a renewed sense of direction!”

The proud SEIU Local 1 Canada members gathered at the Hilton Suites, where they had the opportunity to hear MPPs, colleagues and SEIU representatives speak about the issues that matter most to them.

“We’re fighting on your behalf. We’re fighting for a decent wage, respect, dignity, and the ability to have a good life at home,” said Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Local 1 Canada. “You inspire me. I’m honoured and privileged to be on your team.”

In the afternoon, the group broke into smaller leadership workshops, where they were able to share their personal successes, tips and words of wisdom.

“A leader is someone who listens, lends a helping hand where they can, and is there when you need them,” said Lisa Venesoen, of London, Ontario. “It takes someone who goes beyond their call of duty to get the job done.”

The day ended on an inspirational note, with Ibrahim Downey, Chief Inspirational Officer for SIB-KIS Counseling and Consulting, hitting an uplifting chord with the audience.

“Those who learn empower themselves. And when you learn, you’re able to achieve the goals you set for yourself. I hope you’re always learning.”
