Stewards Showcase

2011 was a momentous year for Stewards at SEIU Local 1 Canada. Many leaders within the workplace stepped up to take on this exciting role to create the change our members truly deserve.

SEIU members at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) celebrated a recent grievance victory with a holiday themed lunch and dinner on December 14. Jermaine King and Ricky Lima, both PMH Stewards, helped host the celebration.

“Food certainly brings people together,” said King, who also sits on SEIU’s Executive Board. “It’s our way of saying thank you for all the hard work our members have done this year.” King, a long-time Princess Margaret Hospital SEIU Chief Steward, was elected to SEIU Local 1 Canada’s Board of Directors at the 2011 Convention in November. SEIU Local 1 President Sharleen Stewart congratulated PMH members for their grievance win, and wished them a joyous holiday season.

New Stewards also took the Oath of Stewardship at Toronto East General Hospital in December. Karen Brennan, an SEIU Union Representative, had the honour of leading the swearing in ceremony.

“I’m very proud of all our new Stewards,” says Brennan. “We’ve got some wonderful leaders, and I couldn’t be happier for the members.”
