Library packed with people who want to save TEGH’s physiotherapy program

SEIU Local 1 Canada’s campaign to save Toronto East General Hospital’s outpatient physiotherapy program got a huge boost Tuesday night after local MPPs, medical professionals, patients and community leaders gathered together at a town hall meeting to discuss how to keep this vital service open to the public.

Damian Wyard, an SEIU chief steward at TEGH, offered several cost-saving measures to save the program but the hospital chose not to adopt any of SEIU’s proposals.

Mark Beadle, president of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association, said TEGH’s decision is not a new development. Hospitals throughout Ontario have been phasing out their physiotherapy departments for over the past 15-20 years.

Other speakers included community activists, local MPPs, and two current patients who wondered where they will go after the service is shut down.

The auditorium at the S. Walter Stewart Library on Tuesday March 9 in Toronto was packed with people who wanted to save the program. See who was there.
