• January is Alzhiemer’s Awareness Month
• Women represent almost three-quarters of Canadians living with Alzheimer’s disease
• One-third of Canadians with dementia are waiting for spaces in nursing homes
• Unpaid caregivers spend 231 million hours a year looking after someone with dementia. This will increase to 756 million hours within a generation
• 500,000 Canadians have Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. In 25 years this number will more than double to 1.1 million
• Approximately 70% of Alzheimer’s disease patients receive care at home
• Fifty per cent more Canadians and their families could be facing Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia in just five years
• The majority of caregivers in Canada are between 45 and 54. Many balance this role with job and family responsibilities
• 1 of 4 seniors over the age of 85 have Alzheimer’s
• Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia. Alzheimer’s patients make represents around 70% of all cases of dementia
• Half of Canadians know someone with Alzheimer’s and one quarter of Canadians have someone in their family with Alzheimer’s
• Caring for people with Alzheimer's costs about $5.5 billion in Canada every year.
